Fall on the Farm

Harvests are still happening in the field. Don't miss out on fresh lettuce, spinach, bok choi, salad mix, radishes, turnips and more. Check out the website for full selection!

My garlic is finally planted! I am pretty excited about it. I saved all my biggest bulbs and planted them for next years crop. I also saved my smallest bulbs, and planted them for green garlic for early next year. I plan to mulch it all this afternoon with some organic straw I got from my neighbour.

This morning I spent working on next years crop plan. That way I will know what seeds to order, what equipment I need and how I will utilize the field space that I have. I am always optimistic while making the crop plan. This year I have the advantage of knowing what worked this past year and what didn't. For example, my plan of having 40 beds per plot, didn't quite work out, I know now that I can realistically get about 25. However, I also know that the turnover of beds in the garden is significantly higher and I should definitely count on having at least two, and in some cases three crops planned for each bed. Some crops that I planned on transplanting last year have been moved to be included with the plants being direct seeded (namely bok choi and rapini). And I have made sure to leave peppergrass and baby chard out from under the row cover. It doesn't need the protection, plus the peppergrass grows so fast, I want to be able to see it! I am going to double the amount of peppergrass I grow, and halve the amount of baby kale. Small adjustments and changes to hopefully get the most out of the 5 acres of farm!
