Mid Summer on the Farm

This week on the farm has been a lot of catching up and finally settling into a routine. Since I have Cali and Erin managing at the markets, I have been able to finally get things set up on the farm. Monday has become a seeding day, where I plant my weekly plantings of Lettuce, Spinach, Peppergrass, Beets, Dill, Cilantro, Baby Kale, Arugula, Bok Choi, Radishes, and Turnips. With such poor weather this spring, germination has been poor, but now I am able to make irrigation part of my routine. It is still not perfect, when I spoke to my old boss the other day I told him how it takes 1.5 hours to fill the water tank, and 40 minutes to empty it onto the field. He mentioned that they irrigate for 4 hours after planting (directly from their deep well). I already knew this. But this method is a vast improvement over my previous method of just crossing my fingers and hoping for rain. Unfortunately, there are plenty of instances in farming where all the hard work just doesn’t pay off. Luckily for me, it is a labour of love and passion.
I feel so lucky to live here on my family farm, and spend my summers outside listening to the birds and the cicadas. I have often paused this summer to appreciate a summer day with a warm breeze, the sun on the chicory along the roadside, and the colour of the sky as the sun sets. I have always loved my home and like to take time to admire and observe the constantly changing views as the seasons shift. I look forward to continue my work on my farm and appreciate everyone who has helped me along the way.
