Spring Cleaning

This has been my first spring back on the farm where I grew up. The tiny house is working exactly as planned. In the mornings I am able to walk right out my door into my greenhouse and be surrounded by plants (and get right to work). I spent the nice calm nights last week cleaning up around the farm and I finally finished mulching the new garden bed in front of my house last Sunday. I am excited to finally be able to plant out and grow more of the perennials that I start every year.
Speaking of those perennials, they are starting to show signs of life! The perennials that overwintered outside the barn farmstand survived a cold winter outside. That means they are particularly suited to our climate. Each time I look I see another one growing.
Last week I finally got caught up on on my seeding. This led to me being mildly confused for a day or two. But it also gave me time to work on crossing items off my page and a half to-do list. With so much on the go, it is easy to keep busy no matter what the weather throws at us.
This week I got the last of my marigolds seeded and I am getting ready to plant my peppers for my garden. I also did my weekly seeding of lettuces to transplant out into the field. Meanwhile my chamomile, forget-me-nots, snapdragons, and godetias have all been transplanted into 4” pots. I think these are the nicest snapdragons that I have ever grown, and I can’t wait to see them bloom. I am thankful that I have a warm oasis to hide in and enjoy the sunshine while the cold spring winds blow.
Louie the puppy has been enjoying the spring weather, except when he has to stay on a tie out during store hours. But don’t worry, he gets plenty of exercise every other day of the week, running around the farm and enjoying being a farm dog.
It’s also my turn to run around the farm. He is sure to join me now, as I go out and take a field walk and see how the gardens look.
