Taking Some Time Off

When I took a break from Gwen's Garden Produce 4 years ago, one of the things I noted to myself is that it would be best if I took some time off from my market garden, or at least farmers' markets in August. This year, it was a last minute decision, but think was a good idea. Growing up on a farm, the saying "Make hay while the sun shines" is not a metaphor, but literal advice. So, with farmers' markets only lasting 22-23 weeks a year, I put every thing I had into trying to grow product and attend every single one. It was years before I realized that I was the only produce vendor doing that.

It's easy for my parents, grain/beef/maple syrup farmers, to argue that farming is hard work that requires long hours. But I think it is different when you harvest and plant your grain once a year, vs. harvesting and planting your crop weekly. Market gardening is different than grain production, which is something that my father and I have discussions on all the time.

My ultimate goal is to increase my off season production, growing more fall and spring crops, outside of the window of the farmers' markets. Focusing primarily on salad greens. Over time, hopefully I can add more selection. For example, on the to do list today, is to start strawberry plugs. I am hoping to start a new patch for next spring

I would like to thank everyone who has supported me. Despite many hiccups, it has been a good year. The farmers' markets have been busy, people have come out to the farm (whether or not I've been ready for them), and I am making progress in moving the farm forward, in ways that seemed impossible 5 years ago. I am optimistic about the future and am exciting to keep my growing season going this fall!
