Every Wednesday for the last 3 weeks, Ray at Janssen's Farm Fresh Produce has announced how many more market days left. We are currently sitting at 5. I can't believe that there are so few remaining. This year has flown by. I will miss the markets when they are done this year. I have felt such an outpouring of community support as I returned home to finally work towards organic certification, and seeing the Forest Farmers' Market grow with new farmers and artisans grow has been amazing (if you haven't made it, you should go!). The only thing I won't miss is waking up at 5:00 am to still arrive late (by my standards) to Goderich. However, even this week as I stood in the 12 degree celcius weather and on and off pouring and misting rain, Goderich welcomed me, just like when I worked up there for the past two years.
I am hoping to get my pumpkins and squash harvested this week. It is just a matter of finding the time between markets, but the weather harvest looks promising this week. So hopefully I get a nice crop of pie pumpkins, kombocha squash, and butternut squash. I also started digging potatoes last week. One of the benefits of living on a farm, is that when you want potatoes for dinner, you can dig them right from the field. The farmer's market attendees got to enjoy the remaining fruits of my labour, but I will be digging more this week.
I also started prepping my garlic this week. I am going to begin sorting it soon. I will keep the largest bulbs for me to plant, the smallest bulbs to harvest early as green garlic and the mid-size bulbs to sell. If you are looking for bulk garlic, it is available now.
